This study entails an analysis of the language within sustainability frames used by local media in their communication about the environment. Sustainability frames are essentially the tools used to shape and focus environmental messages; framing otherwise abstract ideas gives them meaning and clarity. By analyzing articles within the Mountain Xpress, a free tabloid that publishes an environmental issue annually, this study seeks to identify the language used to shape discussions around sustainability which may influence perceptions and attitudes about the environment. An influx of academic research about sustainability frames occurred in 2018. Therefore, this study will examine articles in the 2018 environmental issue of Mountain Xpress. This study broadens the understanding of how language is used in environmental communication to encourage sustainability.
